7th Sept 1989 - Limerick Colbert Street
Two trains side-by-side under the train shed, ready for departure. On the left, 141 Class no. 150 has the 15.20 Limerick to Dublin Heuston train. On the right is 001 Class no. 049 and the 15.35 Limerick to Rosslare cross-country service. Oh, so much has changed since this view was taken!

No. 150 would have lasted in traffic until the early 2000s, but passenger service would have been very rare for it towards the end. And as for 049, well this classic Irish locomotive was in its final years of service already. Built 1955-56 the 001 Class were constructed by Metro-Vick, Manchester, and originally powered by Crossley two-stroke engines. These proved to be very unreliable so the whole class was re-powered between 1968 to 1971 with EMD 645E engines. As such the locos remained the backbone of Irish Rail trains until replaced by the new 201 Class. I always thought they had a sad expression on their face!
