There is some significance for me in this shot as it was the last time I witnessed a Valenta-powered HST in regular service.

This is the 09.18 Sunderland to London Kings Cross Grand Central service running through the platform 3 at 11.26. The train was not booked to stop here so it gently rolled through until the driver applied the power and roared through as only an original HST could ever do, with the rear power car screaming by the time it passed me. I took this sound for granted back in the '70s and '80s, but this moment brought back fond childhood memories of trainspotting at Reading station, when this routine was commonplace. It had been a long time since I had heard this sound and I realised then it would probably be the last. I was due to catch a train to London and then home, and never did get back to the ECML until Grand Central's power cars were re-engined. This is their 43123 leading, and 43084 is on the rear.
