(1) Only 23 EMD GP40X units were built, primarily for the testing a proving of the "50" series technology. Santa Fe bought 10, of which no. 303 will be one of (the last of 4 on the roster at this time. The UP, SP and Southern Railway shared the rest between them. No. 3030 is seen resting in the yard.
