16th Aug 1996

The stabling point at Swindon station was situated adjacent to the junction for what is known as the Golden Valley line, to Cheltenham. On this visit there were 4 locos present, all in immaculate condition and sparkling in the summer sun. From left to right: Mainline Blue 37372, Mainline Blue 37248 "Midland Railway Centre", and two locos gleaming in a new coat of English, Welsh & Scottish Red & Gold, 37220 and 58048.
37372 is now being used as the donor loco to create a Baby Deltic at Barrow Hill: a "cut-and-shut" job if ever there was one! 37248 is now in fine fettle and preserved at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, 37220 went on to work in France in the early 2000s (the only EWS-liveried loco to do so) and was subsequently scrapped, and finally 58048 is stored at the Battlefield line in Leicestershire, awaiting its fate. The remaining part of Swindon Works stands in the background.
